PLANET OF THE APES ( 1968 )
What’s become an iconic classic is really just a goofy single-concept monkey show. Obviously, Chuck Heston leads the cast as the displaced astronaut stuck in a strange world where man is the beast and vice versa. Roddy Macdowell and Kim Hunter play compasionate simians who want to help Chuck when the rest of the ape world is up against him. Their performances make the movie as does John Chamber’s still-amazing ape make-up. PotA is sci-fi melodrama at its best; still very entertaining even if its confusing social message is a little creaky. The twist-end revelation has become one of the most quoted, parodied and referred-to scenes in movie history. Tim Burton somehow screwed up the 2001 remake – unable to improve upon the concept with a huge budget and better effects. Four consistently mediocre sequels followed.
