MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: THE MOVIE (1996)
It’s really nothing more than an episode of the TV show with a bigger budget for bumper segments and the snark target isn’t the kind of b-grade “cheesy movie” fans of the show might expect — but it’s just as hilarious as some of the best eps from the early Comedy Central years. The basic MST3K premise has Mike Nelson (Michael J. Nelson) stranded in deep space with three cute robots — prisoner of mad scientist, Dr. Forrester (Trace Beaulieu). Mike and two of the bots, Crow and Tom Servo, are forced to watch This Island Earth as part of Forrester’s “experiments.” While public domain oddities like Eegah! and “Manos” The Hands of Fate are typically the focus of the trio’s wisecrack-fueled commentary, their first cinematic outing plops them in front of the above-mentioned sci-fi classic without diminishing yuks. Those unfamiliar with the TV show will be a little confused for the first few minutes, but will have no trouble getting the idea once TIE starts rolling. Many of the best episodes of MST3K are available on DVD. I recommend the ones featuring Santa Claus Conquers the Martians and Mitchell.
