Gamera the Invincible (1965)

This, the maiden voyage of Gamera, introduces us to the flying fire-breathing turtle, kicking off what’s commonly known as the poor-man’s Godzilla franchise. Blame the U.S., who accidentally detonates a handful of atomic weapons (whoops, Apocalypse!) releasing Gamera from the icy tomb where it’s remained preserved since prehistoric times. In what was to become a series staple, Gamera knows how to connect with the kids: a telepathic boy in this one. GtI is the same movie as the previous year’s Gamera but for the US-dubbing and some awkwardly inserted scenes featuring American character actor Dick O’Neil. This is Gamera’s first and last black and white movie. In what seems like an aggressive nod to a major influence, we see the Toho Theater destroyed by the beast.
