Ginger Snaps (2000) Reviewed

Is there a more delicious premise than one concerning a sexy teen girl who contracts a werewolf virus that makes her one unforgettable prom date? Well, there’s no prom in this movie and it’s not a comedy. On the contrary this under-the-radar Canadian gem built its sleeper following on its clever set-up and deadly-serious tone. The werewolf bug is an obvious allegory for female puberty but don’t let that put you off. This is sinister, smart stuff with a capable cast of mostly unknowns. Mimi Rogers has a few brief moments as a sympathetic but clueless Mom. As of this writing, the US-released DVD is a pan and scan, extras-free bummer. Try to get your hands on the Canadian print. A sequel and prequel followed. ***
