SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS (1964)
Truly awful “Christmas movie” offers about as much holiday cheer as a Labor Day parade. The script is wince inducing, even for a kid’s film. Martians decide that their children are too pouty so they do what any neglectful interplanetary parents would and kidnap Earth’s jolly old elf. There’s something very sinister and dreary about the way it all plays out. The sets are depressing, the Martians are bad actors in green make-up and Santa is a conniving old kook. Pia Zadora makes her inauspicious debut as one of the morose Martian children. Bumbling “comic relief” character, Dropo, becomes very difficult to even look at by his second appearance and the animated opening theme music “Hooray for Santa Claus” will haunt you for days. SCCtM is almost too painful an experience to recommend for even the kitsch appeal. I can’t imagine any child of any age being even remotely interested in this movie.
