Assault on Precinct 13 (2005) Reviewed

This remake of the John Carpenter cult classic is respectful, efficient and worthy of its title. A winter storm requires that a busload of prisoners make an overnight pit stop at the down and out Precinct 13 jail. Lawrence Fishburn is the dirty-dealing gangster that Gabriel Byrne and the other dirty-dealing cops want dead. Ethan Hawke is 13’s washed up police captain who must redeem himself by holding down the fort under fire. In spite of some clunky dialogue, Fishburn and Hawke are excellent as is Brian Denahey as the department’s salty Irish old-schooler. There’s lots of hard-R violence and action that rarely lets up. There’s a nice-looking snowy show-down in the last reel. John Leguzamo is a bit much as the “chatty” criminal but Hawke proves himself a capable action star.
