Attack of the Giant Leeches (1959) Reviewed

The town drunk sees an unusually large water-bound creature. No one believes him when he warns them and, naturally, those non-believers begin to disappear one by one. The Southern gothic feel to AotGL makes it stand out. The title monsters themselves aren’t much to look at but where these types of movies are concerned, their method makes them more sinister than, say, your average killer shrew or giant gilla monster. They don’t suck their victims dry but leave just enough blood to keep them alive. The sight of most of the cast bobbing helplessly in the leech lair is surprisingly horrifying. The diabolically sexy Yvette Vickers plays a philandering wife who seems a great deal like the tempting mistress she played in Attack of the 50-Foot Woman…and that’s fine by us. This is a good drive-in monster movie that would play well with any of the above-mentioned beasties.
