The Beast of Yucca Flats (1961) Reviewed

Tor Johnson as Lawrence Tierney as The Thing as The Beast of Yucca Flats.

Watch giant Swedish wrestler Tor Johnson play a Russian scientist (piece o’ cake when there’s no dialogue to worry about) and wander around the desert with even less direction than he received in Plan Nine. Commie agents are after Doc Tor and the nuclear secrets he keeps hidden in his briefcase. When they chase him into a bomb test in the titular location he becomes the titular beast. There’s lots of shooting but confusing editing keeps you from knowing who’s been killed, hobbled or missed completely. There are long stretches of multiple characters sneaking around the desert doing God-knows-what. The narration doesn’t give us much help either. There’s no dialogue other than what’s been added in post production. Conrad Brooks appears briefly and nothing even remotely interesting happens at any point. A brief boob-shot was cut from the opening scene for TV — the cut version is the one most widely available. It doesn’t get much more incompetent than this. …and I kinda love it for that.
